Material Options for Steps and Stairs

Manufactured Slab Steps

These are larger, solid, one-piece steps manufactured from concrete. Weighing 300-400 lbs each, they aren’t going anywhere after installation! Some have a traditional concrete look, but many options and styles are available.  Wetcast steps provide many options including the look of natural stone, but in more uniform thicknesses. There are even concrete slab steps cast from wood that look like the real thing. 

Natural Stone Risers

Natural Stone risers can be used in a variety of situations. Used in conjunction with rock outcroppings, stone risers can transform the look and feel of your garden to a wilderness retreat. These larger stone slabs really stand out.  

Timber Landscape Steps

For wood steps, we will typically use a pressure treated wood or cedar if available. Large 6x6 timbers are great options for both steps and retaining walls. These will be reinforced with rebar and timber screws to increase the life of the build.  

Manufactured SRW Block

Block steps are typically integrated into block retaining walls. If you need steps or access to an area where you are already building an SRW retaining wall system, it may make sense to stick with the same material for the steps to keep a uniform look. There are many varieties and styles of block to fit your desired look and budget. With this type of system, there are many options for different stair treads that can enhance the overall appearance.
